Checking for updates

About QuillArk shows the version you are running, and a Check for updates button beside it.

Pressing it asks the QuillArk website for one thing: the number of the newest released version. If that is newer than yours, QuillArk says so and offers a link to the download page. It does not download anything, and it does not install anything — what to do about a new version is your decision, and you make it in your browser.

What is sent

Nothing but the request. No account, because there is none. No identifier, no serial number, no name for your computer, and nothing at all about what you are writing. The request says which version is asking, so an old copy can be told what it needs, and that is all.

When it happens

Only when you press the button. QuillArk does not check on startup, does not check on a timer, and does not check in the background. If you never press it, it never asks — and everything else in QuillArk carries on working with no network at all.

Our server sees what any web server sees when you open a page: an address and a time. If you would rather it saw nothing, do not press the button. The releases page in your browser tells you the same thing.

If it cannot check

You will be told plainly, and nothing else changes. Being offline is the usual reason. QuillArk never guesses that there is an update when it did not get an answer.
