Backups

Revision history protects versions of a document. A backup protects everything at once.

Project → Create backup writes a single ZIP containing the whole project: manuscript, worldbuilding, notes, images and revision history. Search indexes and thumbnails are left out because QuillArk rebuilds those.

To restore, unzip it into your Books folder. QuillArk will find it next time it starts.

On a schedule

Settings → Files and backups has a backup folder and a schedule. Switch on Back up automatically and QuillArk writes a ZIP of each project every so many hours without being asked.

Two things it will not do:

• It will not write a backup of a project that has not changed since its last one, so an untouched project does not fill your disk with identical ZIPs.
• It will not delete anything. When more backups exist than the number you asked to keep, the oldest go to your system’s trash — the Recycle Bin on Windows, Trash on Linux — where you can still get them back. Only files QuillArk itself wrote are ever considered; anything else in that folder is left alone.

If no backup folder is set, backups are written beside your Books folder.
