Publishing

Publishing turns a manuscript into a finished file.

Presets

A preset holds everything about how the book is laid out: trim size, margins, typography and page numbering. QuillArk includes presets for the common paperback and hardcover sizes, a large-print layout, and standard manuscript submission format. Copy one and change whatever you like.

Presets are stored separately from your writing, so changing a layout can never alter a word of the text.

The Print layout view shows real pages: mirrored margins, running heads, page numbers, front matter in roman numerals, and chapters starting on a right-hand page. What you see there is exactly what the PDF will contain, because both use the same page composer.

Preflight

Before exporting, run Preflight. It checks the things a print or ebook service is likely to reject — margins too narrow for the page count, images that will look soft in print, a missing cover, inconsistent chapter titles — and explains how to fix each one.

For Amazon KDP

Use the trim size you plan to publish at, run preflight, and export PDF for the print interior and EPUB for the ebook. Modern KDP accepts EPUB directly, so there is no need for an older format.
