The Archivist · Age 16
A grief-sharpened survivor who reads living things and machines the way other people read faces, Wren fills her mother’s field journal with everything she learns about the alien enemy. Her only weapons are her eyes, her nerve, and a refusal to stop trying to understand the things that ended the world.

Wren’s restless little brother and the reason she keeps fighting, Bram is brave the way kids are before fear sets in. He chafes against his sister’s overprotection, certain he can earn a place beside her in the dark.
The Fighter · Age 17
Disciplined, principled, and the cell’s best fighter, Reyes believes order and force are how you stay alive. He’s slow to show what he feels, and slower still to admit that Wren’s reckless curiosity might be exactly the kind of courage the war needs.
The Engineer · Age 17
Wren’s best friend and the resistance’s gadget-maker, Theo is the tinkerer who can make terrifying alien salvage actually work, imperfectly and brilliantly. He jokes hardest when he’s most afraid, and he carries the weight of everyone he’s already lost.
Resistance Commander · Age 45
The hard, fair commander of the Warren’s resistance cell, Holloway speaks in economical truths and hides a ferocious grief beneath her discipline. Her one law is survive and never provoke — a doctrine Wren’s learn-and-strike instinct will test to its limit.
The Scientist · Age 50
The resistance’s scientific brain, Sorenson sees the alien enemy not as a terror but as a problem to be solved. She knew Wren’s mother, and she mentors the girl as the field researcher Lena would have wanted her to become.
The Drifter · Age 17
Drift-born and lethally at home in the open wilds, Sela reads weather, water, and the prickle of danger the way Wren reads the enemy. Blunt and free, she distrusts walls and the people who hide behind them — until trust is earned the hard way.
The Scavenger · Age 19
A fast, cocky veteran scavenger with a showman’s grin and a fatalist’s heart, Roan courts danger and hides just how scared and tired he really is. He is Wren’s rival, her reluctant ally, and the mirror that shows her where her own recklessness could lead.
Leader of Cinderhold · Age 55
The pragmatic, ruthless ruler of the walled enclave of Cinderhold, Calloway is convinced that hiding, hoarding, and never provoking the enemy is the only way to keep his thousands alive. He sees the resistance as a death-wish that draws the enemy’s eye to everyone.
Factions
A disciplined resistance cell hidden deep in the mountains, where stone swallows the enemy’s command field and a small, poor band fights by learning the enemy rather than out-muscling it.
A large, fortified human enclave that survives by walling up, hoarding salvage, and turning the desperate away at the gate — ruled by a Warden who has chosen safety over everything else.
