The same statement that appears inside the application. Please read it before using VialTome for anything that matters.

What VialTome is

VialTome is a research organisation, education, documentation and mathematical calculation platform. It helps a researcher keep track of projects, subjects, protocols, supplies, records, references and reports, and it performs deterministic arithmetic on values the researcher supplies.

It runs entirely on your computer. There is no account, no cloud service, and nothing is transmitted anywhere unless you export a file or follow a web link yourself.

What VialTome is not

  • It is not medical advice. Nothing in VialTome — including the Knowledge library, the calculator, or any report it produces — constitutes medical, veterinary, pharmaceutical or clinical advice.
  • It is not a substitute for a qualified professional. Medical, veterinary, pharmaceutical, legal, regulatory and research-ethics questions belong with people qualified to answer them.
  • It does not prescribe, recommend or select anything. The calculator answers "given these values, what does this correspond to?" — it never decides whether an amount is appropriate. The Knowledge library records what sources reported; it does not endorse any of it.
  • It is not intended to assist, encourage or enable self-administration of research chemicals, medicines, steroids, peptides or other substances.
  • It does not make a study compliant with anything. Recording an approval number, a registration or a consent status stores that information. It does not create compliance with any regulatory standard, and VialTome makes no such claim.

How evidence is handled

The most common way research information becomes misleading is by blending categories: a mechanistic argument gets repeated as a finding, an animal result gets read as a human one, and a forum post ends up cited as evidence. VialTome refuses to combine them.

◆ Study-Reported

Information recorded in a primary scientific source — peer-reviewed literature, registered research or regulatory documentation. The study model (human, animal, cell, in vitro, ex vivo) is recorded alongside the claim, because a finding in one model is not a finding in another. Presence in this tier documents what a source reported; it is not an endorsement of the practice.

▲ Theorized / Mechanistic

Reasoning from what is known about a target, pathway or structural class to what might follow. Mechanistic plausibility is an argument, not an observation: it has repeatedly failed to predict measured outcomes. Statements in this tier are inference and are labelled as such.

● Grey Market & Community-Reported

Observations gathered outside any controlled design. These reports are uncontrolled, unverified, subject to selection and recall effects, frequently confounded by concurrent substances, and are not evidence of safety or efficacy. They are recorded because they describe what is actually being done — not because they establish that it works.

Published exposures are recorded under an explicit heading: documented study exposure, not a recommendation. Where no evidence was located, the page states the gap in a sentence rather than leaving a blank section — an empty section and an absent section mean different things.

Research involving people

Research involving human participants should comply with the ethical, legal, institutional, informed consent, privacy and regulatory requirements that apply where the research takes place. That typically includes review by an ethics committee or institutional review board before any research begins.

VialTome provides fields to record this information. Filling them in is a record-keeping act, not an approval.

Research involving animals

Research involving animals should comply with the animal welfare requirements and institutional oversight that apply where the research takes place.

Substances, regulation and sport

Regulations vary by jurisdiction and change over time. Some substances documented in VialTome's Knowledge library are investigational, controlled, prescription-only, prohibited in sport, or not approved for human use anywhere. Some do not lawfully exist outside a laboratory.

VialTome records regulatory and anti-doping status as it was understood when the knowledge pack was assembled, with the date it was checked. You must verify the current position yourself — for your jurisdiction, for your context, from the primary source.

If someone needs help now

VialTome cannot help in an emergency

It is a record-keeping tool. It does not assess urgency and it does not contact anyone. For a medical emergency, contact your local emergency number. For a suspected adverse reaction to an approved medicine, report it through the pharmacovigilance system in your jurisdiction. If your study has a sponsor or an ethics committee, follow their reporting requirements — VialTome reports nothing on your behalf.

Recording a safety event in VialTome is documentation. It is not a report to anyone.

The calculator, specifically

The calculator performs deterministic unit, concentration and quantity arithmetic on values you supply. It uses decimal arithmetic rather than floating point, shows every step so you can audit it, and warns about values that look unusual.

It will never select an amount, suggest one, or assess whether one is appropriate for any subject.

It also refuses to translate a volume into marked syringe units until you state which barrel you are using, because a syringe "unit" has no universal meaning — a U-100 barrel carries 100 marks per millilitre, a U-40 barrel carries 40, and a tuberculin barrel carries none at all.

Legal wording

The disclaimer wording throughout VialTome and on this site is informational draft content prepared for a free research tool. It has not been reviewed by qualified legal counsel. If you need language that carries legal weight for your institution, have it drafted by someone qualified to do so.

Licence and warranty

VialTome is released under the MIT licence. As that licence states, the software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied. You are responsible for verifying that it is suitable for your purpose, and for the accuracy of the information you enter into it.

Where these principles show up in the software

These are not statements on a page the application then ignores. They are enforced in the code.

Calculator

Shows every step; refuses to convert a volume to marked units without a stated barrel calibration.

Knowledge

Separates study, mechanistic and community evidence; states gaps explicitly; never invents an identifier.

Add to a project

Transfers identity and classification only. Published and community amounts are never copied across.

Safety module

Records your relationship assessment. VialTome makes none of its own and computes no causality.

Measurements

Charts values against the interval supplied with them. Never interprets a result or implies causation.

Reminders

Framed as research workflow reminders that you configure — never as prompts to administer anything.
