7 Arc 1: The Hero's Vision Cultivating Innovation and Future Thinking Chapter 1: The Idea Spark The apple rolled halfway across the cafeteria before somebody caught it with a shoe. Ventre watched its owner rescue it, balance it on a tray, and join the crowd near the waste station. Three containers stood along the wall. Above them hung three signs, almost identical from the distance of the lunch tables. Students approached, hesitated, and looked behind them as if the person waiting there might know what to do. "Every single day," somebody muttered. Ventre nearly said the same thing. The new school year had settled into its familiar rhythms: crowded hallways, homework tucked into the wrong folders, and this little traffic jam before the bell. Today she wanted to reach her locker early. Her science notebook was beneath a sweater she had been meaning to take home since Monday. The student ahead of her held an empty carton over one container, changed his mind, and moved toward another. Somebody behind Ventre sighed. A cafeteria staff member answered a question, then immediately answered it again for someone else. Ventre tightened her fingers around her tray. Why couldn't everyone just read the signs? She looked up to prove how easy that would be. From where she stood, another student's shoulder covered the first sign. The second had a small picture that might have been a cup or a carton. Light from the tall windows shone across the third. She leaned sideways, trying to read it, and nearly bumped her tray into the person beside her. Oh.

17 Hero Tool Breakdown Hero Tool: Future Scenario Map What it is: A drawing of several realistic ways a situation could develop, with possible benefits, difficulties, and unanswered questions along each path. Why it matters: Planning for more than one possibility helps you prepare and adapt. A scenario is a possibility to explore, not a promise or prediction. How to use it: 1. Put a clear problem or goal in the center of a large page. 2. Identify influences such as people's choices, time, resources, and changing rules. 3. Ask "What if?" about those influences and draw different paths. 4. Name each path. Describe reasonable consequences, including both opportunities and difficulties. 5. Compare the paths. Choose something useful to learn or do now, and revisit the map when new information arrives. Everyday application: Map possibilities for a school project or a new habit.
