Chapter 34

Mindful Moment Bell

A gentle cue for a short check-in with the present activity, surroundings, and feelings. The bell can be a routine event rather than a device alarm. This is an optional attention practice from the book, not a test of concentration or a treatment claim.

When to use it

Use at ordinary transitions when a brief check-in will not interrupt safety, another person’s needs, or a task requiring continuous attention.

How to use it

  1. Choose one unobtrusive cue, such as finishing a meal or closing a schoolbook. A cue tied to an existing routine may be easier to try than several new alarms.

  2. When the cue occurs, pause only if it is safe to do so. Keep walking safely, following instructions, or handling the immediate task when stopping would create a problem.

  3. Notice something in the surroundings, one feeling, and any comfortable-to-notice bodily sensation. An external object can be the focus if inward attention feels uncomfortable.

  4. Take an ordinary comfortable breath if desired. There is no required depth, count, or breath-holding pattern. The check-in does not depend on changing the breath.

  5. Choose one small adjustment if needed: lower an avoidable noise, clarify a direction, ask for a break, or return attention to the current task.

  6. After a few trials, keep, change, or remove the cue according to usefulness. More reminders are not automatically better, especially if reminders themselves become distracting.

A worked example

A practical illustration of the method.

Invented example: Closing a workbook becomes a cue. A child notices tense shoulders and confusion about the next assignment, then asks an adult to explain the first step. The cue leads to a useful question rather than a demand to feel calm.

Use it thoughtfully

Stopping in an unsafe place because the cue occurred.

Turning reminders into another source of pressure.

Insisting on inward focus or a breathing pattern that feels uncomfortable.

From the book
